The videos on this page are part of a series of free training videos and webinars. The purpose is to give teachers and other educators access to free training on how to teach mathematics from a developmental framework.
LKDSB Addition & Subtraction #1
This video, filmed in partnership with Lambton Kent District School Board, uses Dr. Lawson's Continua to explore early strategies used to solve addition problems through counting. We look at the distinction between counting on a direct model and counting on and tracking and discuss some games that educators might choose to help students transition up the continuum
LKDSB Addition & Subtraction #2
This video, filmed in partnership with Lambton Kent District School Board, uses Dr. Lawson's Continua to explore "working with the numbers" strategies that students might use to solve addition problems. In addition we look at ways teachers might model and/or scribe student thinking to support mathematical development.
LKDSB Multiplication & Division #1
In this video, we use Dr. Lawson's Continuum of Student Numeracy Development to explore some of the early strategies children use to solve multiplication problems and the key idea of unitizing that underpins them. We introduce 5 ways teachers can help students who might be counting one item at a time to shift up the continuum and use more sophisticated strategies.
LKDSB Early Years #1
In this video, made in partnership with Lambton Kent District School Board, we use Dr. Lawson's Continuum of Student Numeracy Development to explore how students develop the concept of "how many". In this webinar we focus on subtilizing and some ways educators can help develop this understanding of number.
LKDSB Early Years #2
In this video, made in partnership with Lambton Kent District School Board, we use Dr. Lawson's Continuum of Student Numeracy Development to explore how students develop the concept of "how many". In this webinar we focus on the 3 parts of counting and a few of the key ideas that are required for accurate counting.
LKDSB Early Years #3
In this video we look at mathematical problem types and how to intentionally ask questions during play to open up children's thinking to different, new mathematical situations and relationships. A big hat's off to Jenn Gardiner ECE in a kindergarten classroom in LKDSB for all her contributions to this video.
